Map of US Proton Treatment Centers
I thought it would be helpful to readers and visitors to have a visual map of the proton treatment centers around the US. Many people will want to know geographically where the nearest center is to their home, and this gives you a quick glance of both centers in operations, as well as those that are under construction. If you notice a center that is missing, please let us know – post a comment to this blog post.

University of California, San Francisco has a low energy proton center and cannot treat prostates, but they do treat many other tumors with protons.

I looked into the UCSF proton facility, and it looks like they focus (no pun intended) on ocular melanoma, so my previous “many other tumors”, may only describe number, not variety.
Also, I just attended a meeting today where it was claimed that there are now 13 proton centers treating prostate cancer in the US today, but they didn’t say where the 2 newest ones were.
At that same meeting, someone claimed that an individual practitioner in Jacksonville was offering proton therapy. Treatment for prostate cancer was implied, but not explicitly claimed. There’s a site named jacksonvilleproton.com which touts brachytherapy and thoroughly disses proton therapy, to the point where I don’t believe anything they say.

A new provider in the proton therapy world is Mevion Medical Systems. They currently have one clinically operational installation in:
S. Lee Kling Proton Therapy Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital
St. Louis, MO.
They list 5 more sites as “under installation”, including First Coast Oncology in Jacksonville, about 12 miles south of UFPTI. That machine was delivered last weekend. They also list 4 more sites in the planning and contract stages, totalling 10 more sites on-line in the next few years.
Their system, the “S250”, uses superconducting magnet technology in a synchronous cyclotron to deliver 250MEV protons more efficiently with a smaller, less expensive accelerator than the previous generation of cyclotrons. Each machine serves only one treatment room, but otherwise uses the same science to provide the therapy to treat prostate and possibly other cancers.
This can only be good news for the proton therapy community, and may server to drive down the cost. They have a basic web site at http://www.mevion.com.
